Letters From Teens

Dear Mom,
I want you to celebrate me! Lots of times, I feel uncomfortable in my own skin. I want to fit in with everyone, and so I try new things. I really need you to cheer me on, no matter what. I need you to notice when I wear my hair different, or I try a new style. Even if you don’t like it, I need you to tell me, “You look great!” Your approval means a lot to me, and it boosts my confidence in a way that I can’t always draw from myself. I always hear your “No”. I need to hear your “Yes” . Tell me, “You can do it”, tell me “I believe you can”, Tell me that you see my inner strength, my integrity, my passion for life, my courage and my loving heart. I need you to see me, Mom. I need you to call out the beauty in me and really enjoy who I am. I can tell when you are enjoying me, because you have that look in your eye. It usually comes when you stop to really listen and understand the things I have going on in my life. I feel your enjoyment when you flop down on my bed at night; when you have no agenda but just to be with me. That’s when I open up. This is the moment when I receive your love. I can feel you celebrating me, and it helps me accept myself more. I’m searching to know who I am right now, and somehow, when I feel how valuable I am to you, it helps me gain the confidence that I am maybe more okay than my fears want me be believe about myself.

“I can talk to my mom about anything. She listens to me and sees my point of view before we decide about things. I like to talk out loud about whatever is on my mind, and my mom never takes things too personally."
